The Beginners Guide To Writing An Essay

The Beginner's Guide To Writing An Essay It should be specific in telling the reader exactly what your stance is and what main pieces of evidence or logic reinforce it. While you can’t cover everything in a single intro paragraph , your summary should discuss the main points or major supporting ideas in your essay from beginning to end. A lot of college English handbooks offer essay prompts to help students see what types of topics can work well for the assignment. In this post, I’ll walk you through 10 important writing skills you’ll need to know to write an awesome paper. The shortest paragraph had 98 words and the longest had 367 words. This is fine unless the assignment has a word and paragraph limit. I have an assignment that requires 8 paragraphs and 1000 words. It seems crazy for a teacher to be this specific for a paper, but she does stuff like this all the time. I would find it difficult to express all the information in such a short paragraph for most of my writing. There are times when they can be this short, but I would say most should be a lot longer. I usually write about 250 words in each paragraph, ending up writing about 5 paragraphs. I don’t understand why so many people worry about things like this. ” If you need to figure out words per page, you can use a words per page calculator. As you research your essay topic, search for this story of surprise, and don’t start writing until you can find it. Honestly, throughout most of high school and college, I was a mediocre essay writer. Check to see if there are any free services for students. Usually, these tutors won’t edit your paper for you, but they can help point out mistakes and guide you toward success. Focus on what’s important, not on things like this. The truth is there is no definitive answer to this question. For example, if the assignment says the writing should be in 10-point font, it’s going to take a greater number of words to fill a page than if the assignment requires a 12-point font. There are instances when you’re given an assignment, not by word count, but assigned by the number of pages. Every story is about conflict and change, and the truth is that essays are about conflict and change, too! The difference is that in an essay, the conflict is between different ideas, the change is in the way we should perceive those ideas. However, toward the end of my time as a student, I made a breakthrough. I figured out how to not only write a great essay, I learned how to have fun while doing it. I know personally how boring writing an essay can be, and also, how hard it can be to write a good one. My teacher told me that I needed to write an essay that had 2500 words. I got marks off for not writing an essay with exactly 2500 words. That’s completely ridiculous but my teacher refuse to reinstate the point she took off because she said 2500 words and not 2498 words. I could’ve just said that my was 2500 words and she would’ve never known the difference. Writing your argument happens when you join the conversation and give your own ideas and opinions about the topic. You draw on others’ comments that support your ideas and debate those whose opinions are different from yours. A thesis is your main argument wrapped up into one or two sentences, usually near the end of your intro paragraph. I don’t understand why I’m being punished for being honest. Is this really something that’s worth complaining about? The important issue is to write the best essay you can, not the length of words. If you’re focus in only on the words and not what you’ve written, your writing is never going to be good. Never EVER blow through a single draft of an essay and turn it in to your professor. One of the best essay writing skills you can develop is the ability to review and edit your essay for mistakes in grammar, typos, and logic. For essays that aren’t argumentative or persuasive, focus on leaving readers with a strong final impressionâ€"whatever message you want them to take away from your words. If the reader doesn’t see you as an expert on your topic, then you need to show that your ideas are reinforced by credible voicesâ€"experts in the field of your topic.

The first sentence of the introduction paragraph should be as captivating and interesting as possible. The sentences that follow should clarify your opening statement. Conclude the introduction paragraph with your thesis statement. The writer convinced me that the paper is going to be 100% original, so I decided not to waste time. The introduction is the first paragraph of the essay. It introduces the reader to the idea that the essay will address. It is also intended to capture the reader's attention and interest. However, at the same time, they always gave me A’s. Like the five sentence trick, this technique makes the writing process simpler. Instead of putting the main focus on writing well, it instead forces you toresearchwell, which some students find easier. The purpose of the introduction is to give your reader a clear idea of what your essay will cover. It should provide some background information on the specific problem or issue you are addressing, and should clearly outline your answer. While like an expository essay in its presentation of facts, the goal of the persuasive essay is to convince the reader to accept the writer’s point of view or recommendation. The writer must build a case using facts and logic, as well as examples, expert opinion, and sound reasoning. You don’t have to stay in one place and write from beginning to end. Give yourself the freedom to write as if you’re circling around your topic rather than making a single, straightforward argument. Then, when you edit, you can make sure everything lines up correctly. When I used this technique, my professors sometimes mentioned that my papers were very “source” heavy. The writer should present all sides of the argument, but must be able to communicate clearly and without equivocation why a certain position is correct. A cousin of the narrative essay, a descriptive essay paints a picture with words. A writer might describe a person, place, object, or even memory of special significance. In a descriptive essay, the writer should show, not tell, through the use of colorful words and sensory details. The best descriptive essays appeal to the reader’s emotions, with a result that is highly evocative. Depending on your faculty or school, ‘your answer’ may be referred to as your position, contention, thesis or main argument. Whatever term is used, this is essentially your response to the essay question, which is based on the research you have undertaken. It’s also where you develop a discussion or argument. In order to substantiate your argument, you will also need to offer evidence. This could include examples or quotations from authoritative sources.

Tips to keep your phone safe - Free Essay Example

Recently, there has been an alarming upward trend in cybersecurity breaches, with 2018 seeing over 600 breaches only halfway into the year. Cybercrime is now the fastest growing crime in the US, and according to the FBI every 3 seconds, an identity is stolen. Thats 35,000 every day and more than 15 million every year! Major companies are now falling victim to cyber-attacks including Marriot, Facebook, Google, and Macys most recently. Hackers can now get personal information from customers such as phone numbers, email addresses, credit card numbers, and birth dates, and much more. As hackers are becoming more advanced, the ways they can steal information are growing, making mobile devices vulnerable to cyber-attacks now too. According to Wandera Inc., the number of malicious malware installation packages found striking mobile devices more than tripled in 2016, resulting in almost 40 million attacks globally. This all may sound frightening but fear not! There are many ways to protect your phone from cyber-attacks. Keep reading to learn several ways you can keep your phone safe from malware applications! How Hackers Infect Phones With Malware 1. Infected Apps Infected applications are the most commonly used delivery system for hackers to transfer malware to mobile devices. Hackers typically choose popular apps like PokemonGo or Whatsapp to replicate or infect, increasing the chances of their rogue app being downloaded by users. Occasionally, hackers will come up with brand new applications infected with malware to infect your phone. Infected apps are most commonly found on third-party app stores but recently have been showing up more in official app stores like Google Play or the App Store. In 2017, Google removed over 700,000 potentially malicious apps out of the Google Play store before they were able to reach Android users. Since then, the vetting process for apps to enter the official app stores have become much more rigorous and secure making it more difficult for the malicious apps to get in. Even so, some malicious apps are still able to slip through the cracks and get into both the Google Play store and Apple App store. 2. Scams Scams are another favorite tool amongst hackers used to infect mobile devices. Users are redirected to a malicious web page, either through a pop-up screen or a web redirect. Sometimes, links to infected pages are sent directly to users through email or text messages. Once the infected page has been visited, the code on the page triggers the automatic download of the malicious software. The sites are usually designed to replicate legitimate websites to get users to accept the file on their devices. 3. Malvertising Malvertising is the use of online advertising to spread malware. The ads look the same as regular advertisements and can appear on a wide range of apps and web pages including legitimate online ad networks. Once the ad is clicked on, the user is taken to an infected site, which triggers the download of the malware and infects the device. Some examples of more aggressive malvertisements are ads that take up the entire screen of the device while using the internet. If the screen is touched, it triggers the automatic download of the malicious file. 4. Direct to Device This is the least commonly used method to infect devices with malware, but it still happens to a few unsuspecting individuals. This can be done at the hands of the user or by a hacker accessing an unattended phone. When it is done by the user, its often the unintentional result of them deciding to download an application directly to their phone from a third-party website that appears to be safe but is indeed infected. When its done by a hacker, the hacker manually downloads the malicious software onto a device thats been left unattended or stolen. The most common example of this method in use is spyware being installed on the phones of spouses by their partners so they can monitor them. Below are some of the types of mobile malware most commonly used today: Spyware – monitors and records information about users actions on their devices without their knowledge or permission Adware – short for advertising software, shows users frequent ads in the form of pop-ups, sometimes leading to the unintended redirection of users to web pages or applications Financial malware – attempts to steal users bank credentials without their knowledge Ransomware – form of malware that locks the user out of their files or their device, then demands an anonymous online payment to restore access Trojan – hides itself within a piece of seemingly innocent, legitimate software to gain access to target users systems Rooting malware – roots the device, basically unlocking the operating system and then obtains escalated privileges SMS malware – manipulates devices to send and intercept text messages resulting in SMS charges. The user is usually not aware of the activity Recent Mobile App Attacks Earlier this month, two malicious fitness iOS apps were able to infiltrate the App store and steal money from users by taking advantage of the TouchID feature on iPhone devices. The apps Fitness Balance app and Calories Tracker app, appeared to be new legitimate fitness applications in the App Store. But, once downloaded and opened, they began initiating payments in the background for the amounts of $99.99, $119.99, or ‚Â ¬139.99. They then tricked users into unknowingly approving the charges with onscreen prompts asking the user to use the TouchID sensor to set up and access their content. If users already had previously registered payment information in their App Store accounts, the transaction would be approved and accepted immediately. There was one flaw in the apps design though; it quickly displayed a pop-up showing the pending transaction which prompted some skeptical users to stop the finger scanning process. Whenever users became suspicious and refused to scan their fingers, the app would fail to start and continuously show the finger scanning prompt in a loop until the user either completed the scan or uninstalled the app. Many iOS users fell victim to this scam because of its legitimate appearance, high ratings, and favorable reviews. Posting fake reviews is becoming a commonly used technique by hackers to improve the reputation of their apps. Using methods like this, hackers are often successful in getting their malicious apps downloaded. Because of this, users on Android and Apple devices alike are falling victim to apps that sneakily steal their personal information or scam them out of money more than ever. Some of these apps have even been reported of being capable of recording audio and video on users phones to use against them for blackmail. With hackers becoming more clever with the methods they use to scam individuals, its important to be smart about the apps you download on your mobile device. Follow these suggested tips to keep your phone safe from malware applications! Tips To Keep Your Phone Safe 1. Always use official app stores- While some apps do manage to sneak inside official app stores for both Android and Apple devices, using only official app stores to download applications to your phone dramatically decreases your chances of downloading an infected application. 2. Read the reviews- Use reviews to screen apps before downloading them. Often if there are issues within an app, users will comment on whether or not the app does what it says it will, or if the app seems suspicious. Also, if an app has only 5-star ratings, this too could be a warning sign that the app might be malicious since hackers often pay for reviews to make the app seem more legitimate. Often, if looked at in combination, the reviews and star rating can be a great indicator to the validity of an app. Its safe to say if an app has low ratings and bad reviews you shouldnt download it. Alternatively, if an app has all 5-star reviews but terrible reviews its probably a suspicious app. 3. Verify its really the app you are looking for- Hackers often create malicious apps that mimic popular apps, so they can sneak their way into app stores without being detected and get downloaded by unsuspecting users. The most significant incident of this was the lookalike WhatsApp application published by hackers in the Google Play store being downloaded by more than 1 million users. If youre looking up a popular app but see errors in the description or the logo looks a little off, dont download it. 4. Check which permissions it asks for- Always check which permissions apps ask for before using it. If the app requests permissions that dont make sense or are unreasonable, dont trust it. Beware of apps that ask for permission to run in the background, to control the keyboard, phone, and messaging functions, or to launch other apps. If an app asks for permissions that it doesnt need to run properly, its probably suspicious. 5. Regularly update your phone and applications- Make sure to keep your operating system up to date! New system updates often include new security patches to protect your phone from new cyber threats. 6. Dont jailbreak your phone- Many malicious apps like spyware can only be installed on jailbroken phones. Jailbroken phones are unlocked and able to bypass many of the security settings that are standard for the devices. This lack of security allows hackers to remotely control devices through installed apps to steal users private data such as passwords, emails, photos, messages and much more. victims Warning Signs You May Have An Infected App It disappears from the home screen once downloaded It displays strange behavior when launched or crashes a lot It asks for additional, unnecessary permissions It drains your battery or data more than usual Unfamiliar apps have been added to your phone If you believe your phone may be infected with a virus, try downloading one of these free trusted antivirus applications to remove the virus: AVG AntiVirus Free, Norton Security and Antivirus, or McAfee Security: Antivirus, Anti-Theft Safe Web. If you are an iPhone user and fear that you may have a virus simply try restarting your device, clearing your website history, or restoring your phone to a recent back up to remove the malware virus. 1. Restart your iPhone or iPad: Hold down the power button until you see Slide to Power Off touch and slide until it turns off. To turn it back on, hold down the power button for a few seconds until you see an Apple logo. 2. Clear your history: Settings Safari Clear History and Website Data tap Clear. 3. Restore your iPhone or iPad to a recent backup. Make sure your device is set to automatically backup. If it is, you can restore it to an earlier backup, when you werent having problems. To turn on Backup: Settings iCloud turn on Backup.

Painting Music By Philip Evergood Essay Example For Students

Painting Music By Philip Evergood Essay The Painting Music by Philip Evergood is most definitely one of my all-time favorite paintings. The painting has so many rich colors and lively shapes. It literally makes you feel as though you were sitting either in the same room as the people in the painting or possibly even playing music along with them. I think that what Philip Evergood was trying to accomplish with this painting was a feeling of unity through music and I believe that he did an outstanding job of showing this. He made a great effort to show the diversity in his subjects. He shows old men, young men, black men, white men, old women, young women white women, and black women. He uses his theme of music to show incredible unification. One other thing that I especially liked about the painting was the fact that you could almost feel the type of music being played in this modest room. You actually get a feel for the time period and just by being able to see the detail in the individuals clothing and expressions on there face there is something here that screams jazz. In further research I found that Evergood was indeed a jazz fan and the time period 1933- 1959 does indeed make it a possibility that jazz was the music that these individuals were playing. I especially like how Evergood incorporated so many different instruments in his work. Yet another link to jazz in my opinion. He has an insane amalgamation of horns and brass and drums and violins. He has not only portrayed the diversity of music and people but he has shown the unity in music and I think that this was his main theme and I believe that it could not have been executed more beautifully by any other artist at any other time. From the theme of unity and his ability to express it so well to his actual painting technique I believe that Evergood has accomplished something that so many artists reach for. He has given his painting life. He has shown that there is a direct meaning behind themes in his painting. Themes that are not so much hidden but more or less right in your face, ready to be taken in. The faces of each of his characters are wonderfully detailed to the point that you can almost tell what it is that each person is feeling. I will definitely be looking for more works done by Philip Evergood because of his warm inviting colors and curves that he puts in his work. He is truly a master at bringing subjects to life. I absolutely love this painting and I feel that he has portrayed his intentions beautifully through his work.

Lessons I Learned from a Suicidal Arsonist

Lessons I Learned from a Suicidal Arsonist On Friday, September 26, I set out to travel from New York City back home to Madison. I dutifully arose at 4:00 a.m. to meet a car service, arriving at the airport with plenty of time to spare. Boarding went smoothly and we left the gate. I looked forward to a 10:36 a.m. landing in my hometown after 3 days at a conference in Denver and a week with my family and friends. I had wonderful plans for Friday evening and Saturday. Then the announcement came: There has been a fire in the Chicago air traffic control tower. All flights in and out of Chicago have been delayed. The guy across the aisle from me began cursing and waving his fists around. I resolved to take the news better than he was taking it. After calling United twice and spending an hour on hold, I managed to get rebooked through Atlanta. But when I landed in Atlanta there were three voice mail messages advising me that my flight to Madison had been cancelled, and one informing me that I had been rebooked on a flight the next day through Washington D.C. I would, if all went as re-planned, arrive in Madison at 9:12 p.m. Saturday night. The punch line is, I made it home. But there’s more. Throughout this adventure, I learned or was reminded of some valuable life lessons. Here are some of them: One person can truly make a difference. That guy Brian Howard who set a fire in the Chicago air traffic control tower was one single man who managed to paralyze air travel across the country for two days. I’m guessing he also affected security measures at air traffic control towers throughout the world. Yet so many of us sit around thinking we can’t make a difference. What are the extreme positive acts you could take to change something you want to change? Surrender to what’s so. When faced with the prospect of spending the night in Atlanta, I was not thrilled. But since all flights to Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago and pretty much all areas surrounding were cancelled, I decided the best plan was to surrender. I got on a line for customer service, hoping there might be a hotel voucher for me if Atlanta was my only overnight option. An hour later I was at the counter, having had some lovely conversations with other stranded travelers, and discovered that there were no more hotel vouchers remaining, and that my flight to D.C. was that very night. Suddenly I had a new reality before me, and I accepted that one too. It’s amazing how much my stress level went down when I dealt with what was so instead of wishing it were another way! It’s good to have friends everywhere. Through a combination of college connections and my dance community, as well as other life adventures, I have built a network of friends and family in almost every major U.S. city (and some overseas cities as well). Drop me in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Austin, Tucson or Tel Aviv, and I will have a friendly place to lay my head. When I discovered I would be in Washington, D.C. for a night, I started calling friends, one of whom, my college buddy Sara, was happy to put me up for the night. I had not seen her in about 10 years, so it was a great treat to spend unexpected time with her. Not only that, but she had kale in her fridge, a blender, and a free pass to her gym which we used to attend a class together Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon we swam together in an outdoor pool, well after any such pool in Madison would ever be open. I also saw a high school football game that was highlighted on Fox 5 Friday night! I was well taken care of. And I got on a deep l evel that I have led my life well to be able to call on so many people to help. Of course I would do the same for all of them. Talk to strangers. In the customer support line and on various airplanes Friday and Saturday, I met some other waylaid travelers. It was good to connect with humanity. They put my situation in perspective, and helped me out by watching my bag while I went to plug in my phone, whose battery was on its last legs. One woman guided me where I needed to go in D.C. to get to the suburban Metro stop where I met my college friend Sara. I noticed I felt fairly upbeat given the monkey wrench that had been thrown into my life, and on one of my plane rides I identified why: I was talking to strangers! In an article I read on the plane in Success (which is quickly becoming my favorite magazine), I discovered that a social science study by researcher and professor at Harvard Business School, Michael Norton, Ph.D., showed that â€Å"talking with strangers can be at least as important to our daily happiness as talking to our close friends and family.† Norton confirmed this to be true regardless of personality type. I know it is true for me! I always feel more energized when I connect with the people around me than when I retreat into my shell. On Saturday night my flight departed from D.C. on time and landed in Madison 30 minutes early. My housesitter Mariah picked me up and drove me home, where I arrived fairly exhausted yet grateful. I slept well that night, knowing that I am well-loved, resourceful, connected, and able to handle the challenges that one suicidal arsonist  threw in my direction. 🙂 This is a good reminder to travel a couple of days early for any important event. African American Children and Religion Research Proposal

African American Children and Religion - Research Proposal Example Others have limited their coverage of the research population, excluding young African-Americans for a variety of reasons. This researcher, however, believes that there is an urgent need for research that highlights the positive aspects of the social behavior of today’s generation of young African-Americans, using data involving a youth research population. It is hoped that such an investigation of an important and growing sector of contemporary American society would contribute to knowledge of African-American culture, more specifically on the aspect of psychology of religion. It is further hoped that the results would provide concrete strategies for action that would inspire present and future generations of African-American families and youth to perform their important role in strengthening a nation founded on and inspired by Christian ideals. Aims of the Study The aims of this study are as follows: 1. To determine the impact of religious practice or non-practice on the social attitudes and behavior of African-American children from the ages 8 to 19 residing in a specific community. 2. To examine the religion-based determinants of positive social attitudes and behavior. 3. To identify and describe the positive religious practice role models of the research population under study. Hypothesis The study will test the following hypotheses: 1. African-American children who engage in positive religious practices develop positive social attitudes and exhibit positive social behavior (H.1). 2. African-American children who do not engage in any type of religious practice do not develop positive social attitudes and exhibit negative social behavior (H.2). Review of Literature and Preliminary Discussions One of America's founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, stated that "religion will be a powerful regulator of our actions, give us peace and tranquility within our minds, and render us benevolent, useful and beneficial to others" (Isaacson, 2003, p. 87-88). Over the last quarter of a millennium, American society has undergone a seismic shift in several aspects, more notably in the role of religion and the belief that its practice has beneficial effects on society. Several studies (Paul, 2005; Inglehart and Baker, 2000; Idler and Kasl, 1992) have attempted to show the correlation between America's social problems and the negative effects of secularization on the practice of religion, and that such a development would have detrimental consequences to the future of democracy. Aral and Holmes (1996) and Hummer et al. (1999) also showed that this phenomenon is evident not only in America but also in other developed democracies such as Europe and Japan. On the contrary, they argue, democratic nations such as those in predominantly Catholic Latin America and in parts of Africa with societies influenced by Christianity (such as Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ethiopia) where the people are noted for religiosity often exhibit the worst forms of social behavior. In another study, Barro and McCleary (2003) used the term "spiritual capital" in reference to the social benefits that proceed with the practice of religion. They concluded that Americ a's deep social problems in a period of great economic prosperity and the highest expenditures for health care among

Open the Social Science - Essay Example tain level of â€Å"cultism† develop around the male population, which causes them to be held in an almost deity-like way for the potential they hold as sources of propagation of the species. We might be surprised to see some very unusual circumstances develop around the males; the â€Å"Amazonian woman,† fiction come to life where a largely female society might â€Å"use† men in way that is now associated with fulfilling sexual fantasies, and for which some people even today might pay a high price to experience. Bizarre â€Å"tribal† ceremonies have historically and anthropologically surrounded the human male/female conditions, and in a society that where the population scales are permanently changed in a way that men would be less accessible to women, we might expect to see some very strange â€Å"ceremonial† tendencies manifest themselves even in a civilized culture. What we probably would not see in a society where the male/female proportions we re permanently altered, is a tendency towards same sex relationships. It is unlikely that because of a shortage of men heterosexual women would turn to lesbianism, especially since it would not propagate the species. To the extent that that did occur, it’s unlikely that we would see it in a pattern of â€Å"permanent relationships,† since a lesbian experience probably wouldn’t be any more satisfying to a heterosexual women in a society where there fewer men than it is in a society where there is a balance in the male-to-female numbers. 5.) It would be necessary to employ a methodology that pays strict attention to the emotional responses of the members of the society to the behaviors

Prehistoric caves in Spain and France have hands drawn on their walls with all the major lines shown in amazing detail. Cultures around the world have been turning to the fine art of palmistry for hundreds of years in an attempt to unlock the mysteries of the cosmos Palm reading, otherwise known as palmistry or chiromancy, is practiced all over the world, with roots in Indian astrolog y and gypsy fortune-tellingalmistry or palm reading, also known as chiromancy, comes from the Greek words, kheiros, which means hand, and manteia which means oracle, divination. The history of Palmisty originated in India, and later moved on to China, Egypt, and ancient Greece, gathering many different variations. Palmistry (also known as chiromancy) is the art of reading a persons palms in order to gain insight on certain personality traits and life experiences. Some claim that the ever-changing lines on our hands also provide a glimpse at our futures, There are specific palmistry schools that provide training courses for the same. Supporting Point: Transition: According to palmistry, hidden facts about life can be revealed with the help of palm reading. Each of the palm lines have a significant meaning of their own. III. Body II:. A. Main Point 2: A palm reader starts with the obvious and carries on via innumerous intricate steps of interpretation and judgment, to minute details. The conclusions that are made are not about certainty, but of the tendency or probability. A practitioner of palmistry usually starts by studying both hands; if you are a right-handed person your left hand is thought to be the birth hand, which reveals character predispositions that are inherited, while the right hand is considered as reflecting individuality, potential, and flexibility. For left-handed people, its the other way round. Here is a general explanation of the various types of hands, according to palmistry: So, which of the hands must you look at if you want to find out? Each hand tells a different story. There is an active hand and a dormant hand Traditionally, most palmists have advocated examining the left hand of women and the right hand of men. However, this approach will only give you half of the story of your volunteer’s life. Instead of limiting yourself to just one hand, take a closer look at both hands to see what deep secrets can be revealed. Many modern palmists now believe that a person’s non-dominant hand will show you their personality and proclivities, while their dominant hand will show you how they have applied their talents and ambitions in life. By using both hands when you read palms you can see where your volunteer has been and where they’re going to go. In palm reading, According to Chinese palm reading, the left hand is used for men below 30 years old; while for women below 30 years old, the right hand is referred for palm reading. The Hands Lean and firm hands indicate that the person is very economical. †¢Firm and strong hands mean that the individual has a dependable character. †¢If the palms of the hands are cupped deeply, it usually is indicative that the person will not be good in business. †¢A flabby and soft hand is a sign that the person likes an easy life. For females, the right hand is what youre born with, and left is what youve accumulated throughout your life For mal e, the left hand is what youre born with, and right is what youve accumulated throughout your life. Your dominant hand represents changes and developments in your talents and personality the right side represents individual talent and personality; The active hand represents how you will be able to change your life and your future Your weak hand tells you about your natural personality, the traits you were born with. while the left side indicates potentiality. the dormant hand denotes your inherent qualities and hidden potential by ways of genetics or those which are hereditary. Size: A person with large hands is somebody who would think first and then act while a person with small hands is more active and impulsive and thinks a lot less. The texture of the hand is also a key to the persona of the person. This has to be observed for both, the back and front of the hand or palm. A soft textured hand shows sensitivity and refinement. A coarse textured hand will depict a coarse nature. Calluses will show that the person is either a hardworking person or has a job where he has to work with his hands a lot. Note the texture of the hand, front and back. Soft hands signify sensitivity and refinement, while rough hands signifies a coarse temperament Flexibility of the Thumb: If the persons thumb is flexible to a certain extend, it would mean that he/she is quite accommodating, easy-going and adaptable, while people with more rigid thumbs are pretty obstinate. The flexibility of the hand shows the adjustable nature of the person. The more flexible the hand, the more adjusting his nature is. On the contrary, if the hand is stiff, the person has a rigid personality. People whose fingers can be very easily bent back (90 degrees to the palm) are pushovers. This is also an important aspect to consider in palm reading. The shape of the nails also gives us an insight into the personality traits of the person. Long nails which taper at the tips show creativity; while square nails show orderliness. The color of the hands shows the nature of blood circulation in the persons body. A pinkish colored hand, therefore, shows a healthy individual. Yellow denotes excessive bile production. Blue color shows a circulation problem. 1. Supporting Point: For instance, if youre right-handed then your right hand is the active hand and left hand is the dormant one. And if youre left-handed, its vice versa 2Supporting Point: 3. Supporting Point: Transition: It is a mysterious occurrence that the lines on our palms happen to depict the small and large changes in our lives. These lines are also constantly forming, changing, and disappearing. These lines have fascinated mankind for ages IV. BODY IV: , Palmistry with Mounts A. Main Point 3: The study of palmistry includes deciphering the meaning of lines on the palms. Apart from these lines, there are various mounts on the hand, which stand for certain qualities. These are also important, as are the lines that are on or emerge from these mounts. T he palm mounts are the little mounds of flesh that raise out of the palm (like at the base of each finger. ) The Institute of Palmistry says that mounts are representative of various types of brain activity The mounts are indicative of many traits including ambition, artistic appreciation, courage, and imagination among many others . Texture, firmness, and size are a factor in analyzing mounts 1. Apart from the lines, the texture of the palm, the color, flexibility, shape and size of fingers and nails, etc. also tell a lot about the persons nature Here is some general information about these mounts. 2. SP1: The Mount of Jupiter The mount at the base of the index finger is the Mount of Jupiter and it denotes ambition, leadership, religion, and love of nature. 3. SP2: The Mount of Saturn The mount at the base of the second finger is known as the Mount of Saturn, and it denotes soberness, wisdom, sadne ss, and balance. 2. SP3: The Mount of Sun The mount at the base of the ring finger is known as the Mount of Apollo. It denotes brilliance, artistic tendencies, happiness and success.

ritalin Essay -- essays research papers

Parents throughout the country are being pressured and compelled by schools to give psychiatric drugs to their children. Teachers, school psychologists, and administrators commonly make dire threats about their inability to teach children without medicating them. They sometimes suggest that only medication can stave off a bleak future of delinquency and occupational failure. They even call child protective services to investigate parents for child neglect and they sometimes testify against parents in court. Often the schools recommend particular physicians who favor the use of stimulant drugs to control behavior. These stimulant drugs include methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, and Metadate) or forms of amphetamine (Dexedrine and Adderall). My purpose today is to provide to this class the scientific basis for rejecting the use of stimulants for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or for the control of behavior in the classroom or home. I. Escalating Rates of Stimulant Prescription Stimulant drugs, including methylphenidate and amphetamine, were first approved for the control of behavior in children during the mid-1950s. Since then, there have been periodic attempts to promote their usage, and periodic public reactions against the practice. In fact, the first Congressional hearings critical of stimulant medication were held in the early 1970s when an estimated 100,000-200,000 children were receiving these drugs. Since the early 1990s, North America has turned to psychoactive drugs in unprecedented numbers for the control of children. In November 1999, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) warned about a record six-fold increase in Ritalin production between 1990 and 1995. In 1995, the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), a agency of the World Health Organization, deplored that â€Å"10 to 12 percent of all boys between the ages 6 and 14 in the United States have been diagnosed as having ADD and are being treated with methylphenidate [Ritalin].† In March 1997, the board declared, "The therapeutic use of methylphenidate is now under scrutiny by the American medical community; the INCB welcomes this." The United States uses approximately 90% of the world's Ritalin. The number of children on these drugs has continued to escalate. A recent study in Virginia indicated that up to 20% of white... ...the treatment of children diagnosed with ADHD: Part I: Acute risks and psychological effects. Public Utility of Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA)

The Congress enacted Public Utility of Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA) of 1978 to answer the energy crisis that U. S. was facing (470 U. S. 1075). Section 210 of Title II provides that the act shall promote for the development of alternative energy resources by stopping the practice of electric utilities in purchasing power from non-traditional facilities (470 U. S. 1075).In addition, the act also authorized the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission or FERC to implement the act by promulgating rules necessary to encourage cogeneration and small power production (470 U.S. 1075). The function of FERC includes also the setting of rate of electricity (470 U. S. 1075).Moreover, the act required the rates to be just and reasonable and non-discriminatory and shall not exceed the incremental cost of the electric utility of alternative electric energy (470 U. S. 1075). Pursuant to said act, FERC adopted the maximum rate which is the incremental of full- avoided cost and required all utilities to purchase from qualifying facilities (470 U. S. 1075). The state of New York has set minimum rate of six per kilowatt hour. The appellant argued that it cannot pay such amount because its avoided cost fell below that amount (470 U. S. 1075). PROCEDURE: The Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court granted the petition because the rate of six cents per kilowatt hour exceeded the federally mandated avoided cost rate (470 U. S. 1075). The respondent here appealed to Court of Appeals and it reversed the decision of the lower court on the ground that the federal law and the statute are complementary and the statute is consistent with the purpose of the act.ISSUE: Can the state require utilities to pay more than the full avoided cost rate for their mandatory purchases? HOLDING: Yes, the state can. REASONING: There is no question as to the rate implemented by the state because the Act authorizes it. The state can freely enact regulations or laws providing rates as long as it achiev es the purpose of the Act. Furthermore, there is no substantial issue than can be debated and so the case is dismissed. DISSENTING: The Act and the state's regulations should be clearly interpreted. The decision of CA is contradictory to the case in Kansas where the court held that the state regulatory commission could not set rates for purchases from cogenerations that were higher than the avoided cost (470 U. S. 1075). Moreover, the state may have jurisdiction to set the rates under PURPA but the extent of their authority shall be settled (470 U. S. 1075). In addition, Justice White found that there are various cases similar to this and the states also have different approaches as to the setting of the rate under the PURPA (470 U.S. 1075). These cases may occur again in the future and in order to avoid it, the issue shall be resolved. Furthermore, the Justice found the issue as important and open for debate (470 U. S. 1075) Works Cited â€Å"Consolidated Edison Company of New York , Inc. v. Public Service Commission of New York, et al (470 U. S. 1075). † 2003. A Modern Day Hero s Journey - 1438 Words

A Modern Day Hero Heroes are heroes for many different reasons, but they all share one important thing in common. They must go through the hero’s journey. Odysseus faced many trials, monsters, and temptations in the epic poem The Odyssey. The steps he took were all part of the hero’s journey and made him the great hero that Homer had written him to be. Today, we have a great modern hero. A large community of people look up to her for guidance through their own personal journeys in life. Laverne Cox went through a great hero’s journey to get to where she is today. The hero’s journey is evident in the life of Laverne Cox because she went through a lot at home and in her childhood, is tested by friends and enemies, and finally, receives a reward. A hero’s home, where they’re familiar and comfortable, is the start of their hero’s journey. Laverne Cox’s home life and family support shaped her into the hero and role model she is today for the transgender community. She didn’t always have her family’s full support. She often felt like a disgrace and an embarrassment to her family. These thoughts lead her to attempt suicide at eleven years old. In an interview, she describes, â€Å"During puberty, the attraction for other boys got really strong†¦ I imagined that my grandmother was looking down on me and that she knew what I was thinking, because she’s in heaven† (Cox).
